Dishonored

Dishonored is an upcoming first-person stealth action adventure video game being developed by Arkane Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks. It is scheduled to be released in October 2012 for Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 3, and Xbox 360.
Set in the industrial city of Dunwall, Dishonored follows Corvo Atano, a legendary bodyguard to the Empress who is framed for her murder and forced to become an infamous assassin to seek revenge on those who conspired against him. Atano is aided in his quest by the Outsider, a powerful being who imbues him with magical abilities. Several actors provide voice work for the game, including Susan Sarandon, Brad Dourif, Carrie Fisher, and ChloĆ« Grace Moretz.
The game is played from a first-person perspective and allows the player to tackle a series of assassination missions in a variety of ways, with an emphasis on player choice. Missions can be tackled by stealth, combat or a combination of both. Exploring levels opens new paths and alternatives for accomplishing mission goals, and it is possible to eliminate all of Atano's targets in a non-lethal manner. Magical abilities are designed to be combined to create new, more powerful effects.

Gameplay

The game is played in first-person, with an emphasis placed on stealth action and the utilization of gadgets as well as the environment to eliminate opposing forces. The game world is a series of self-contained, mission-focused sandboxes designed to allow for multiple avenues of exploration in terms of in-game movement and powers. Between missions the player is taken to a central hub. In-game areas include loading docks, royal estates, poverty stricken streets, and a bathhouse. The game features the ability for the player to save anywhere and also includes a checkpoint save system, with both disabled during combat. There are four difficulty levels which affect the effectiveness of health and mana potions, and enemy perception, damage and responsiveness. The easy difficulty also enables health regeneration.
Dishonored also features role-playing game elements including character upgrade system and moral choices with focus on non-linear consequences. The game is designed to allow the player to complete it without killing any NPC, including boss characters and mission targets. An example of a non-lethal situation given by co-creative designer Harvey Smith involved the player completing a side mission for a character which in turn was rewarded with the mission targets being kidnapped and enslaved in a mine. Each mission contains multiple avenues of exploration and reaching targets, with traversal and exploration of levels designed to support the array of abilities at the player's disposal, rather than having a specific "hacking path" and "sneaking path".
Actions committed by the player are not judged to be of a good or evil morality, but instead are tracked by a "chaos" system that records how much collateral damage, violent actions and deaths are caused by the player. The game world is modified by how little or much damage is caused, affecting story decisions with an emphasis on not punishing the player or forcing them to choose one style of play over another. For example, a non-player character (NPC) who disapproves of violent methods may not support the player and may even betray them. The game reacts to the chaos caused in both scripted ways, such as dialog, and dynamic ways, such as increasing rats, plagued citizens and adding new scenes, and can affect the current mission and future ones. The system also influences the two game endings obtainable, with variations based on which characters live or die. Playing violently can allow missions to be completed in less time than a stealth approach, but will consume more resources such as health and mana potions, which are required more often in direct combat.

Features and abilities

The game features six active powers, four enhancements (passive powers), and 40 "bone charms" that grant the player supernatural perks such as increasing the duration of rat possession. Only three bone charms can be active at any time. Smith and Colantonio stated that it is impossible for a player to accrue all of the powers and abilities in a single playthrough. Mana is necessary to use the abilities and only partially regenerates after use, enough to allow the use of powers like "Blink" and "Dark Vision", but mana potions are required to recover larger amounts of mana, restricting the use of higher cost abilities like "Possession" and "Bend Time". Magic is assigned to the player character's left hand and weapons to the right hand.
The main supernatural powers are unlocked and purchased using Runes, and each can be upgraded. Announced powers include: "Dark Vision", which allows the player to see enemies through walls, their field of view and an abstract representation of sound made by the player; "Blink", a short-distance teleportation ability; "Possession", that allows the player to inhabit and possess other characters from rats and fish to humans temporarily; "Devouring Swarm", which summons a swarm of deadly rats; "Time Bend", that freezes time; "Wind Blast", a gust of wind; and "Shadow Kill" that turns dead enemies to ash preventing their discovery. The player also has access to weaponry including a sword, grenades and pistols. Coins must be collected to upgrade weapons and gadgets.
Stealth is based on occlusion, hiding behind objects and architecture and avoiding the enemies' cone of vision, with lighting also a factor in player visibility. When hiding behind an object, the player can lean around the sides to view the immediate area and eavesdrop, and as long as Corvo's body remains hidden, enemies will not see him. The player can also look through keyholes to gain insight into closed rooms. Enemy AI will respond to sound and can be distracted by the player creating a sound in one place to lure a guard away from their position.
Guards have several states of alertness ranging from normal, to suspicious, aware of the players presence and then actively searching for the player. Remaining concealed from guards eventually reduces the alertness to aware, but it will not return to normal in that particular mission. Enemies communicate their alertness state to their allies, in turn increasing their alertness level.
If the player encounters thugs harassing an innocent passerby, they can be fought off, but the thugs themselves exist within the game world prior to the event, rather than simply spawning in at a designated time or place. If the player encounters the thugs ahead of time, they can be defeated and the mugging will never take place at all.

Synopsis

Setting

Dishonored takes place in the industrial city of Dunwall, modeled after late 1800s-early 1900s London and Edinburgh, that is ruled over by an oppressive regime. In the city, technology and otherworldly forces coexist. Dunwall is a center for fishing and whaling, with whale oil a valuable resource necessary for powering the city. The city is stricken with a plague spread by rats and dogs that is killing the poor and isolating the rich. The infected, known as "Weepers", cry blood and can become violent against others. The government uses the plague as an excuse to take or purge citizens as they wish. Order is maintained by the Tallboys, heavily armored officers on tall, mechanical legs, and districts are separated by Walls of Light, barriers made of energy that disintegrate those that attempt to cross them.

Cast

The main character of Dishonored is Corvo Atano, the Empress' legendary former bodyguard turned infamous assassin. Corvo is skilled in stealth and combat, armed with unusual gadgets, and possesses great supernatural powers. The cast also includes Granny Rags (Susan Sarandon), a former aristocrat now blind and deranged after years of living on the streets; Piero (Brad Dourif), an inventor who builds Corvo's mask and supplies him with gadgets; Admiral Havelock (John Slattery), a loyalist and ally to Corvo; Daud (Michael Madsen), an assassin; and Calista (Lena Headey) a caretaker for the Empress' daughter Young Lady Emily (ChloĆ« Grace Moretz). Carrie Fisher provides the voice of the loudspeakers found throughout the city relaying government propaganda. Corvo is offered aid in his quest by The Outsider (Billy Lush), described as a mixture of God and the Devil, who imprints his mark on Corvo, imbuing him with magical abilities. The Outsider also grants his mark to other characters, granting each different abilities. Smith described the character as an amoral figure who grants abilities, but leaves the choice of how to use them up to the recipient.

Plot

After being framed for the murder of the Empress, bodyguard Corvo Atano is offered the chance to exact vengeance against the Lord Regent and others responsible by The Outsider. The Outsider grants Corvo its mark, imbuing the disgraced bodyguard with magical abilities.

Release

Dishonored is scheduled for release on Microsoft Windows, Playstation 3, and Xbox 360 platforms beginning in North America on October 9, 2012, followed on October 11 in Australia, and October 12 in Europe and the United Kingdom.

God Of War - Ascension

God of War: Ascension is an upcoming third person action-adventure video game being developed by SCE Santa Monica Studioand to be published by Sony Computer Entertainment. The game is scheduled to be released on March 12, 2013 for the PlayStation 3 video game console. The game will be the seventh installment in the God of War series and a prequel to the entire series. The game will be the first installment in the series to feature multiplayer and to be developed with Stereoscopic 3D. The game will also feature a revamped combat and weapon system, and new gameplay mechanics.
Loosely based on Greek mythology, the game will be set in Ancient Greece with the player controlling the protagonist Kratos, who attempts to sever ties with the God of War, Ares, who tricked Kratos into murdering his wife and child. God of War: Ascension will chronologically be the first chapter in the series, forming part of a saga with vengeance as a central theme.

Gameplay

Single-player

The single-player will feature a "revamped" combat and weapon system, "promptless" mini-games and new puzzles. Sony stated the game will offer "fluid, life-like characters, dynamic lighting effects, and world-changing scenarios", although the story is "a little bit shorter" than previous games.
At E3 2012, a single-player demo showcased new gameplay mechanics and combat systems. The demo revealed a revamped quick time event mini-game, which replaces some button prompts with a new prompt-less free-form system (players needing to time attacks or evasion based on enemy's actions, as opposed to an indicated button prompt). Kratos was also shown to be capable of picking up (and stealing) weapons for use against opponents (also allowing Kratos to switch weapons mid-combo), and swing opponents through the air whilst simultaneously attacking. Other new features include the ability to create shockwaves and the "Life Cycle" mechanic: allowing Kratos to freeze enemies and manipulate time for puzzle solving. Several new enemies were also featured, such as the Elephantaur and the sea beast Charybdis.

Multiplayer

The game will offer a multiplayer feature for up to eight players, with a small story element. Players will be on two teams of four where the teams will try to take control of a map in order to earn rewards from the gods, although the players must first sell their champion's soul to one of four deities: Zeus, Hades, Ares, or Poseidon. Each God offers a unique combat play-style and abilities in battle. Players will unlock special magic abilities, new and upgraded armors and weapons, relics and other treasures as players earn XP to level up their Warrior. The "attack-style" of the God players align with is critical to their Warriors "path."
The "signature" multiplayer mode is "Favor of the Gods". In this mode, the first team to accumulate a target amount of points will claim victory. Points, known as "Favor," are earned by kills and other methods. When players are not on the offensive, they may help their team earn points by capturing altars, collecting red orbs from chests, and setting traps for opposing players. Every multiplayer level map features several special power-ups - such as the boots of Hermes for accelerated speed - providing players with a brief advantage.

Plot

The story behind God of War: Ascension tells the journey of Kratos’ redemption from his past sins and the rise of his rage to break free from Ares' bond. According to the officialGod of War: Ascension website, the game is set six months after Kratos murdered his wife and child. Joystiq confirms "players will be introduced to a more human Kratos than ever before" with director Todd Papy stating that the game will be "giving people a look at Kratos' human side so fans can relate to him better and understand some of the stuff he went through when he was younger." Papy also confirmed that Kratos will have the "Blades of Chaos" and that the story takes place after Kratos sold his soul to Ares.

Release

God Of War - Ascention is scheduled to be released on March 12, 2013 in North America.

Production

The film was first announced on July 4, 2008, but Eli Roth and RZA had been talking about the project since 2005. RZA had written the story, and the two collaborated on the screenplay. Roth came on board as producer in 2007, and brought the film to producers Eric Newman and Marc Abraham. Over the course of two years RZA and Roth worked on the screenplay together, talking through every aspect of the story, down to the detail of every weapon.

Filming

Principal photography began in China in December 2010 on an estimated $20 million budget, and had wrapped by March 2011. Filming locations included the city of Shanghaiand the world's largest film studio, Hengdian World Studios. Corey Yuen acted as the film's action choreographer.
The first cut of the film was 4 hours long and RZA suggested splitting it into two films, but Roth disagreed and it was ultimately cut down to approximately 90 minutes. RZA described the film as an homage to the martial art films of the Hong Kong based Shaw Brothers.

Music

The film features music from a variety of artists including The Black Keys, Kanye West, Wiz Khalifa, My Chemical Romance, John Frusciante and Chinese singer Sally Yeh. Composer Howard Drossin provides original musical cues for the film.
RZA had not initially set out to score the film. He inserted temporary tracks of songs he wanted to use. After watching the temporary-track cut of the film, it was decided that the music was not suitable, and it was instead suggested that RZA provided the music. RZA sought Tarantino's help with the score after having previously aided Tarantino in scoring Kill Bill, but Tarantino also suggested RZA provide the score. RZA, aided by Drossin, then developed the score.

WWE 13

WWE '13 is an upcoming professional wrestling video game being developed by Yuke's and published by THQ for the PlayStation 3, Wii, and Xbox 360 systems. It will be the second game in the WWE series and the fifteenth overall in the combined series. It is the sequel to WWE '12, and will be released on October 30, 2012 in North America and November 2, 2012 in United Kingdom.
The game focuses on the Attitude Era of the WWE, replacing it's Road to Wrestlemania Mode with an Attitude Era Mode where the player plays through the Attitude Era. The game gives such characters as Stone Cold Steve Austin and elements as the Monday Night Wars a more important role in the game than in any previous WWE game. The Attitude Era Mode has been described as being akin to and the WWE series' equivalent to NBA 2K11's Jordan Challenge mode.

Gameplay

WWE '13 will run on the game engine called, "Predator Technology 2.0," which succeeds the first version from WWE '12. The Predator Technology 2.0 game engine has been updated from the previous WWE game to feature "OMG! Moments," which is new to this game. This feature allows players to perform ring breaks, barricade breaks, announce table breaks, and catching (mid-air) finishers. WWE '13 will also feature WWE Universe 3.0, which was also further updated to allow the player to edit schedules, television shows, rosters, as well as creating alliances or feuds between several wrestlers. Also, six Divas being able to compete simultaneously in the ring will make a comeback, after years of it not being included in the WWE series.

Attitude Era Mode

New to the series and replacing the Road to Wrestlemania Mode is the game's Attitude Era Mode, which acts as a season mode of sorts for the game. Former wrestler Stone Cold Steve Austin has been described to be a focal point of the Attitude Era Mode, but not the only playable character due to the mode covering a timeline instead of a single player like the Road to Wrestlemania did. Other elements of the Attitude Era such as the Monday Night Wars in which the WWE competed for ratings against World Championship Wrestling and Extreme Championship Wrestling. WCW, despite being responsible for the Attitude Era, will only receive a few mentions and nods in the game, due to the game focusing on the Wars through the point of view of the WWE and the characters that made the Attitude Era a success. The mode is set to begin with what is called THQ's opinion on what started the Attitude Era.
Playing through the Attitude Era Mode gives players the chance to receive over 20 exclusive video packages detailing the Attitude Era. Entrances, arenas and television graphics from the Attitude Era have all been recreated and are put in sync with over 60 cutscenes which are to detail the Attitude Era. To further make the mode seem more akin to the actual Attitude Era, the game features 35 of the top superstars who were present in the WWE during the Attitude Era. In addition to this, playing through the mode and its bonus options allows the players to unlock over 100 unlockable items, ranging from video packages to photo galleries. Commentary from the Attitude Era, which featured Jerry Lawler alongside Jim Ross, too will be present, with the Attitude Era Mode being the only mode in the entire game to feature Ross' commentary, though Lawler is present in Exhibition and Universe modes alongside Michael Cole.
Featuring about 60 matches spread out over a 2 year season, the Attitude Era Mode does not, unlike previous WWE Season Modes, confine the player to using any single superstar, but will instead have the player switch between characters as rivalries and storylines culminate. The matches in the 2 years will happen in the same order as they happened during the Monday Night Wars. Although the matches in the game must progress with the same result as they did in the actual venue, to differentiate from the Road to Wrestlemania mode, the player has been given more freedom, with the addition of historic objectives. The historic objectives were created to stay faithful to the actual Attitude Era, they are shown on a checklist and include moments in the actual WWE regarded historic. The objectives are not mandatory to complete the match, but completing them allows players to gain unlockables.

Development and release

On May 28, 2012, on WWE Raw, during a segment featuring John Laurinaitis and CM Punk, Laurinaitis revealed the release date of the game would be October 30, 2012, while Punk revealed the official cover art for WWE '13. Then two days later on an article at the WWE Games website revealed the first batch of Superstars to be featured in the game including Stone Cold Steve Austin, The Rock, Chris Jericho, Mark Henry (as the current superstar & in his Attitude Era gimmick), Mick Foley (in his Mankind, Dude Love, and Cactus Jack personas), CM Punk, Big Show, The Undertaker, John Cena and The Miz. On June 19, THQ then confirmed that Mike Tyson will be available in the pre-orders of WWE '13. The full roster was revealed at Summerslam Axxess.

Far Cry 3

Far Cry 3 is an upcoming open world first-person shooter video game being developed by Ubisoft Montreal in conjunction with Ubisoft Massive, Ubisoft Reflections, and Ubisoft Shanghai and published by Ubisoft for PlayStation 3, Xbox 360, and Microsoft Windows. It will be the sequel to 2008's Far Cry 2. The game was originally set for release on September 4, 2012 in North America and September 6 in Europe, however it was delayed to November 29, 2012 for Europe and December 4 for North America due to the developers polishing the game.
Far Cry 3 takes place on a tropical island found somewhere at the intersection of the Indian and Pacific Oceans. The main goal of the game is to escape from the islands (as there will be more than one, mentioned by Dan Hay) and their crazed inhabitants.

Gameplay

On June 6, 2011, Ubisoft showcased the demo gameplay of Far Cry 3 in its E3 2011 conference. It was revealed that the player has the ability to shoot enemies behind objects in crouch mode without moving his head up but with free hands. The demo also revealed an overhauled stealth mechanic as well as a possible leveling system based on experience points. The player will also have the ability to perform "takedowns" by performing melee attacks from above or in crouch mode. The game's narrative director, Jason Vandenberghe said that the story mode map will be around ten times larger than its previous installments, indicating that it is still an open world sandbox game. According to new gameplay uploaded throughout video sharing sites, it has been noted that the player will be given the ability to survey and plan out his attacks with stealth takedown combinations and also take pictures with his cameras.

Plot

Far Cry 3 returns the series to a tropical island setting, similar to the first game and unlike the second game, which took place in an African savanna setting. Players will assume the role of protagonist Jason Brody, a tourist who has been stranded on an island chain in the grips of violent local conflict for years. Jason has been separated from his girlfriend and, in his search for her, developers have stated he will have to deal with a wide cast of mostly unstable characters who have been trapped on these islands for some time. In the short demo trailer that was the first footage released of the game in development, Jason interacts with one such character, named Vaas (voice, motion capture and facial motion capture by Michael Mando), who gives an unsettling monologue about the nature of insanity before trying to drown Jason by anchoring him to a cinder block and throwing him into a natural pool of water that has clearly been used repeatedly for this purpose.
Early developer interviews provided little about Jason's backstory, aside from the fact that he possesses a strong skillset as a combatant and survivalist that give him a fighting chance in the desperate circumstances he constantly finds himself in during the events of the game.
More recent interviews have hinted at a change to the story in that Jason is now emphasized to be a man out of his element, with no particular training who just happens to be caught up in the island's chaos as he searches for his friends. At the same time, the story will try to invoke that after a time trapped on the island, it will start to have an effect on the protagonist, showing another side of Jason's personality, according to producer Dan Hay. Developers have also stated that the intended tone of the game will be one of realism and intensity and an attempt to invoke a visceral and constant feeling of danger in the player.
At E3 2012, it was announced that there will also be a co-op campaign with its own story and characters. It can be played with up to four players online or two players playing on split screen. The co-op campaign will take place six months before the events of the single player campaign, and follows four characters who came to the island looking for revenge on the man who stole their money.

Development

In August 2010, PC Gamer reported that development of Far Cry 3 was in "full swing" at Ubisoft Montreal. In the same month, Game and Swedish retailer Webhallen listed the game for a 2010 release, which didn't happen. In January 2011, Ubisoft declined to comment on speculation that Far Cry 3 will be hitting shelves in October after Game Informerlisted the game as an October arrival in its 2011 preview feature.
In February, the Official PlayStation Magazine suggested that the game was due for release at the end of 2011 as the following quote suggested, "Start taking the malaria medicine in preparation: Far Cry 3 could be arriving before the end of the year." This statement was withdrawn in next month's edition where it was stated that the game would be shown on 2011's E3 and that the release date would be bumped back to 2012. In May, the CVs of a couple of stuntmen listed Far Cry 3 as one of their previous projects. The first official walkthrough was released at the 2011 E3 conference on June 6, 2011.
